Donny's Ramblings

Size 36 Pants. XL Shirt.

As of this morning I’ve lost 29.5 lbs. I’m constantly having to pull up my pants, as they keep wanting to fall off. More and more people are making comments about the difference. My stomach is noticeably flatter. Wendy says she sees a difference in my face but I can’t see it yet. I look in the mirror and it looks the same to me. I guess that’s the last place for the weight to leave.

Several people have asked how I’m doing it. It’s rather simple: no more soda, for one thing. I drink bottled water most of the time, but will usually drink a glass or two of orange juice for the vitamin C content. A friend of mine recommended that I switch to V8 instead so that I can still get the vitamin C and save myself the sugar. Perhaps I’ll do that sometime.

For breakfast I’m pretty predictable: I’ll eat one egg sandwich with cheese, except on Tuesdays when I have Eggs Florentine at a café to which I was recently introduced.

For lunch I end up getting the same thing almost everyday as well: a vegetarian sandwich from Safeway. I never thought I’d like such a thing but this one is great. They call it “Veggin’ Out” for those of you who have a Safeway close by. I highly recommend it. Make sure they don’t forget the olive spread. I get the meal deal, but substitute the soda and chips for bottled water and a banana.

Dinner is usually something random, but I watch the amount I eat and keep the portions small. Sometimes I’ll go to a restaurant. Sometimes I’ll be at Wendy’s house and she’ll make me something. Sometimes I’ll splurge and eat a few pieces of pizza. But I try to eat no later than 7pm. If I’m hungry after that time I’ll grab some pineapple or some green veggies.

I also take a men’s vitamin and usually a “vitamin B with C” pill as well. The latter was recommended to me by a person of low character who I once liked but am now having a hard time finding anything good about him. If you’re reading, you know who you are. Sorry, I couldn’t resist getting that dig in there. You’ll just never measure up, my man. (Hee Hee)

I still go to Starbucks every day just to enjoy the atmosphere while surfing the web on my Powerbook, but I’ve given up their Mochas. Those have been replaced with bottled water and a bottle of orange juice.

And then there’s The Trail. I walk and jog a 5.7 mile trail every morning. When walking, I do so as fast as I can without breaking into a jog. There are markers every half mile, so once in awhile I’ll break into a jog when I reach one of them and continue that jog until the next marker. By the time I’m back to my car I’m pouring sweat and look like I just stepped out of the shower, except clothed in sweat pants and a long sleeve sweat shirt. Oh, and my 49ers jacket. That’s worn every day to make me sweat more. Besides, the temperature is usually in the 30s when my walk begins.

I tried walking without my iPod the other day and my time was much worse. I figured I’d just spend the entire walk talking to God. It turns out I spent more time listening to how hard I was breathing. With the music turned up I can’t hear that. It must be psychological, but when I can hear myself breathing hard I tend to slow down a bit. With the music up I don’t feel I’m working myself above what I can stand.

The Trail playlist is almost entirely worship songs. I sing aloud as I walk (as long as nobody is around, that is) and enjoy time with my Creator. I’ll have to shoot some photos of the trail sometime so you can see why I think of it as “The God Trail”. It’s gorgeous. My favorite part is the spot between the 2.5 mile marker and the 3.0 mile marker. That’s usually where I see a beautiful bald eagle sitting on a rock in the middle of the river, looking for fish. He’s there almost every morning. Once in awhile I’m lucky enough to have him glide over my head with his wings stretched out.

This weekend I’ll be in New York for a Porn and Pancakes event and The Today Show is supposed to be there filming it. That being the case, I decided I’d better go to Macy’s and buy some clothes that fit right. Prior to the weight loss I wore a size 38 or 40 pants (depending on the brand) and a XXL shirt. Last night I was happy to discover I now wear a 36 pants and XL shirt. Yes! My goal is to reach a 32 waist and L shirt.

I’ll keep updating each week.

By the way, the Porn and Pancakes event I’ll be attending was mentioned on Saturday Night Live. Click here to go to the Porn and Pancakes website to watch the clip. I find it very humorous.

  1. donny, nice going man. i’m still fluttering around that 25lb loss. however, i still have about 8-10lbs to go in order to be in my healthy target of body/mass index. the hardest part is getting out for exercise. i just hate it, hate, hate, hate it.9ers fan? i didn’t know this. the catch? the montana v marino bowl? stuffing the ickey shuffle? young to rice? these are thin times for the 9ers fans, but i’m faithful.brad

  3. Yep, I’m a huge 49ers fan. Last season I didn’t buy any tickets but the two seasons before that I had season tickets and made almost every home game. Win or lose, it’s fun to be at the game.

  7. I saw the bit on SNL when it aired! I thought it was great. I’d just heard of XXXChurch a few days earlier and I’d been visiting their website. Now The Today Show? That’s great exposure!

  11. **three cheers** Sounds like you have winning plan there. I agree with the friend, V8 would be a nice addition (get the low sodium version). For your pizza splurge – I found a great fat free pizza (Fit and Free Pizza) that only 232 calories, tastes great and you can add nice veggie toppings for variety. It’s available on line, fast delivery. I love it – pizza is one of my favorites and I missed it a lot while dieting. Keep them in the freezer, pop it in the oven for 10 minutes (no microwave!) – and yummy! Lady Rose, co-author Incredible Shrinking Ladies blog, over 60 lbs. lost so far and 90ish to go!

  13. Hey, about Veggin’ Out.

I had one today, because I like it too. I’ve had it twice, and I’m also interested in losing weight. So, I wanted to know the Nutritional Facts.

    Here’s a link to them: http://www.calorieking.com/foods/calories-in-sandwiches-wraps-veggin-out_f-Y2lkPTEyNzU2JmJpZD0yMDQwJmZpZD0xMjA0MDMmcGFyPQ.html

910 calories for a sandwich. 63% of your daily value of total fat and 100% of your DV of Saturated Fat.

    20% Cholesterol and 101% Sodium.

Most of this is coming from the spread, cheese, and avocado. Unless you’re eating fat-free everything else for the rest of the day…you can do a whole lot better than this sandwich, I’m afraid. 😐

No more Veggin’ Out for me.
