I’d rather not call anybody “whacked”, but it seems to me that the “God Hates Fags” people are about as close as one can get, and I don’t really know how to describe them any other way. These are the people who, amongst other things, picket the funerals of our soldiers. They receive a lot of media attention.
Craig Gross from XXXChurch interviews Shirley Phelps-Roper, the founder’s daughter.
The first several minutes of this podcast is a bunch of boring geek talk, but Shirley comes on to rile some feathers at the 14 minute mark (00:14:00). Enjoy! (or not)
I was surprised to learn that many of those in the group have advanced degrees, several being working lawyers. Interesting…

I have no problem saying that woman is way wacked!

There are very few people in the world who can drive me beyond my boiling point by what they say. Shirley Phelps-Roper is one of those people. I see red when I hear that woman claim to represent Christ.

As a perfect Calvanist, believer in predestination, this poor woman is suffering from XXX Legalism in its fatal form.
A good warning to us all what legalism can do to our spirits and witness….

Jean,
What an accurate description.
I was raised in churches that were legalistic. Not quite as bad as this particular group, but not too far off. Perhaps someday I’ll write more about that.

Now that I’ve listened, I can say that this is one of the better interviews I’ve heard with Shirley. The guys kept it playful enough to make it informative without getting too ugly. Good way for people who might not be acquainted with Westboro to learn what crackpots they are without working up a pissed-off sweat like I usually do when I hear her.
This time around, she sounded like (hate speech aside) she could almost be sort of endearing as a sassy, angry, middle-aged woman. I listened to this interview while picturing her voice as belonging to Maxine, that grouchy old woman in the Hallmark cards.

My church was legalistic, too, which is why I love NCR and Dr. G!! Grace is so much better, don’t you think?

what a terrible thing to waste your life on.
According to wiki, all the ‘lawyers’ belong to a ‘firm’ founded and run by the church’s leader.

Carrie,
I actually hadn’t seen that particular video. I’ve seen others, though. I just finished watching that. It saddens me. I don’t think most of them really, deep inside, want to be like they are. I think the old man holds them all together.
At least that’s what I want to believe.
I don’t understand all that hatred, and even less so when it comes to the young children being indoctrinated into it.

I just watched this video and want to cry with grief! How very sad. What struck me the most was the absence of any mention of Jesus Christ, the Messiah, Who died and rose again to give us hope for our eternal futures. Where was the Gospel? The last statement made by the daughter was the clincher, she said she HOPES to go to heaven and not hell. Even with all the legalism and “works,” there was no assurance of heaven. Tremendously sad indeed.

I listened to part of the part of the podcast and watched part of the video- I couldn’t stomach any more. I actually began to feel nauseated. That woman is completely out of her mind.

I have only visited the site briefly. I, too, was horrified. I’ll work up the nerve to try watching the video later. I had never, ever heard of this ridiculous and scary organization. It’s good to be informed, though, and know what kind of crazies are out there.
Thanks again for informing.

I used to live down the street from the Phelp’s and Westboro Baptist Church. I would see them on a daily basis. It’s amazing the stronghold that they have on the city of Topeka. Literally, they are the freakshow of town. When we had out-of-town guests, I would take them to where the Phelp’s gang was picketing just to show our friends how crazy they all are. “Whacked” is putting it mildly!
